The School

28th June – 1st July, 2024   open to 30 participants

The meeting will be preceded by a Sedimentary Provenance Training School. This event will combine elements from the bi-annual heavy mineral school in Milano-Bicocca and sedimentary provenance school of Göttingen. For the first time, these two popular training courses will be combined with the aim to introduce junior scientists to the world of provenance studies and sediment generation.

Topics
The training course will focus on key subjects including bulk sediment petrography and geochemistry, heavy minerals, varietal studies of mineral groups, application of Raman Spectroscopy, detrital geochronology, and compositional data analysis (CoDa). These methodologies form an essential toolkit for characterizing both modern and ancient sediments, with the primary objective of reconstructing the factors and processes governing the erosion, transportation, and diagenesis of rocks and sediment. Special emphasis will be given to analytical techniques, featuring practical lessons using optical microscopes for mineral recognition. Participants will also have the opportunity to visit the Department of Earth Science laboratories for heavy minerals separation, and the London Geochronology Centre for detrital mineral dating. The school will also include a "field trip" to the river Thames. Stay tuned for more info!

Accommodations: for those attending the conference in London, securing accommodation is made easy with various of options available to students/researcher at various price budgets. To facilitate your search, we recommend exploring options on the UCL Summer Residences (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/residences/ucl-summer-residences) and Imperial College London Visitors' Accommodation (https://www.imperial.ac.uk/visitors-accommodation/). These websites offer a range of student-friendly lodging solutions, ensuring a comfortable and convenient stay during the conference.

WGSG Schools

The Working Group of Sediment Generation currently offers three schools covering the most relevant aspects of sediment generation, transfer and deposition from both theoretical and applied perspectives.

The pre-WGSG2024 provenance school will be the first time when these three training courses will be combined together!
